Kagalovska By DaVinci

Kagalovska by DaVinci is special edition brush, that is made in collaboration with Ukrainian artist Kagalovska. Brush has sleek black design and white synthetic hair. It has soft bristles that snap back to shape very elegantly, this makes it very easy to control and pleasant painting experience.

Hair type: Synthetic hair

Reviewed brush size: #0

Brush head dry and wet.

Brush shape is narrow, long and pointy. It belly holds little bit of water, but in general this is not very thirsty brush. This felt like proper quill brush, since it was excellent for painting details. You could do some washes too, but it is quite small for that and water capacity does not yield very big washes.

It comes point effortlessly, when I wipe excess water, it forms a nice sharp point on its own! It does not need any rolling or shaping, it just snaps to point. It also holds its point when you start to run out of water. But still, I could do some dry brushing, when I patted it to towel.

White hairs make its easier to see when you brush is clean, if you have not stained it with staining pigment. White bristles do stain easily, that is sadly not avoidable. I tried to clean it with master brush soap, but they are still slightly pinkish. I still enjoyed the fact, that I could easily see when my brush was clean and when I had color in it.

This brush was pleasantly easy to use. It is not too soft, so it makes consistent lines easy to do. It can do small details without any issue, but with pressure, it can do thicker lines. I didn’t feel any need to switch bigger brush while painting, it handled everything.

Review video: Youtube video here, where you can see all the test I put this brush through and how it performed.

Stroke test

Stroke test sheet. I would like to provide you a high resolution scan, but when I put away the test sheet, I put in the water container! But This is screenshot from the video and luckily it is 4k so it is still good!

Dot test: Brush performed really well in dot test. it kept its point and didn’t flatten.

Line test: This brush really shines on long, thin lines. Average length hairs makes it responsive and easy to control.

Small radial dots: Here tested how brush react to fast, short strokes. When you increase your pressure, and speed you can get those jagged lines on the end of the dots.

Brush shape recovery, radial leaves: This brush makes beautiful leaves, it goes back to shape very smoothly, but fast. It does have decent snap, but not too much like some synthetic might do.

String of leaves: Wiggly leaves are excellent and pretty hard test for brush, here if hairs are too stiff, it creates jagged edges. But this brush just keeps performing top notch and has smooth flowing lines. It goes without problem to thin-to-thick and recovers.

Sizing

Size available: #0, #2 , #4

Sizing chart

Size - Length mm - diameter

0 19 5,4

2 23 7,4

4 35 10,4

Brush is limited edition and it might be hard to come by later. It is available in three sized individually or all the brushes in one set. I reviewed the size 0, which has thicker area of the barrel for more comfortable hold. I would love to see even smaller size, since this brush really shines on details.

Hair properties:

Softness: Soft synthetic hair, that still has some good snap

Thirstiness: Average

Individual hair width: Fine

Tapering hairs: Yes

Brush head color: White

Brush hairs are white synthetic, that taper to a point. Hairs are fine, but they still hold their shape well.

General Quality:

Handle is wood and it has black lacquer. Size, name and brand are engraved and filled with gold paint. I like the minimalist design, sizing and name are on the end of the brush. But if You keep your quills in the pencil pot, it might cover the info.

Ferule

Wire wrapping: Tight

Has extra thread underneath: Yes

French type binding has clear seamless plastic. Wire is gold colored, tightly wrapped at three places. Under the ferule has white thread that is holding the bristles, there is very neat glue line going where hairs meet the ferule.

Price at 2025:

Size 0 cost 24€ at Artemiranda

Availability: Good (as mid2025)

Artemiranda (Spain, EU)

Price is tiny bit higher than similar brush from DaVinci Casaneo line. But excellent built quality makes up for the price, so I feel I gets my moneys worth brush here. Availability is good, it is available in Artemiranda and other online stores too. I link Artemiranda, since I have shopped with them before. Since DaVinci is German company and Kagalovska brushes are made in Nürnberg, I recommend looking it from German online stores.

Pros:

Built quality - great attention to detail and very well made ferule

Very versatile - can do details and small washes

Easy to use - Very predictable and easy to control

Sleek design - it looks good, you notice it in your brush pot

Cons:

Limited sizes available - 0,2 and 4

Limited edition - Might discontinue at soon, and there is no similar brush in DaVinci line up. Casaneo is the closest one.

Recommended?

YES

This would be good for artist that does detail oriented work. I also recommend it for beginners, since it feels to be really easy to control.
